Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, spouse/domestic partner under age 65, and dependent children under age 26 are all eligible to enroll. You may enroll each of your dependent children for $10,000 of coverage; including your adopted children, stepchildren, foster children, and domestic partner’s children. Your spouse/domestic partner can enroll in up to $1,000,000 of coverage, as long as the spouse coverage does not exceed the member coverage.

The Accelerated Payment of Death Benefits1 is included at no cost to the member. This feature allows early access to a portion of your life insurance benefit prior to your death. If you are diagnosed with a terminal illness and have a life expectancy of 12 months or less, you can receive 50% of your coverage amount, or up to $250,000. This feature is also included in spouse coverage.

New! As a member of Virginia State Bar, you can now receive a percentage of your benefit if you become chronically ill and unable to perform a minimum of two activities of daily living (ADL) for at least 90 days or have a severe cognitive impairment. This feature is included within your policy, allowing you to receive up to 25% of your coverage amount, up to a maximum of $125,000. ADLs are defined as eating, bathing, continence, dressing, toileting, and transferring for those requiring substantial supervision. This feature is not included in spouse coverage.

Health questions need to be answered in order to enroll for coverage. An attending physician’s statement or paramedical exam may be ordered, based on medical history.

When you reach age 65, coverage is reduced to 50% of the amount in force at age 64. At age 70, your coverage is reduced by another 50% at the amount in-force at age 69. Coverage terminates at age 75.

Yes, if you cease to be insured for the Member Term Life Insurance because your membership in the covered class ends, or part of the Group Contract providing the insurance ends.

Member Term Life Insurance benefits are payable to your beneficiary(ies).

A death benefit is not payable if your death is caused by a suicide and that death occurs within 2 years of the date your coverage became effective.

Coverage is effective the 1st of the month following approval of your enrollment, subject to payment of the required premium contributions.

No, premium contribution is not required at time of enrollment. Your first premium contribution will be due following approval of your enrollment request.
